Our world has certainly changed since our last newsletter, as I write our borders between states & international destinations are closed. Over the next few months, we will see the borders open along with the “South Pacific” bubble & eventually the rest of the world. Australians are travellers by nature & we all want the privilege of getting out there again. For those wanting a getaway this year, there’s no better time to discover our own backyard.
The Whitsundays & Tropical North regions of Queensland are a great winter escape. You can spoil yourself with an indulgent stay on the islands of Bedarra, Hayman, Lizard or Orpheus. Hamilton & Daydream offer a great range of accommodation & are a stepping stone to the outer barrier reef. Did you know that you can sleep on the Great Barrier Reef? Cruise Whitsunday’s offer two day encounters staying overnight on their pontoon on Hardy Reef which is 40 nautical miles from Airlie Beach. For those wanting an outdoor experience, you can sleep on deck in a swag or discover Australia’s first underwater accommodation in the Reef Suites for an unforgettable night.
Sailing through the Whistunday’s is a wonderful experience, you can skipper yourself on motor cruisers & yachts for all different levels of ability. You can have a fully crewed boat or charter yourself. My family chartered a yacht many years ago in the Whitsunday’s, it was the most magical holiday ever! My parents had no sailing experience & managed to navigate through the intricate islands of the Whitsunday Passage, we swam, snorkelled, fished for our dinner daily, it was so much fun. The Southern Great Barrier Reef has the eco tourist experiences with Heron, Lady Musgrave & Lady Elliot Islands. Heron Island is a national marine park & is an important habitat for many species. The green & loggerhead turtles nest on the island from November to March with hatching starting early January, what an experience to see the baby turtles emerging & making their way to the sea.
Queensland Rail Travel offers one of the most comprehensive rail networks in Australia, with five long distance services and two tourist trains taking you to every corner of Queensland. You can journey from Brisbane to Cairns with a tailor made itinerary stopping at Hervey Bay, Fraser Island & Airlie Beach.
Wherever you decide to travel in Australia, the local communities will greatly appreciate your custom.
